To determine the best cities in the U.S. for couples moving in together, we analyzed the 100 most populous cities across a range of factors that reflect affordability, housing access, and overall livability. This included two-bedroom rent affordability, measured as the share of a couple’s combined income spent on rent, as well as estimated cohabitation savings from sharing a home.

We also assessed two-bedroom rental availability and the supply of newly built apartment units in buildings with five or more units to understand housing access and growth. 

In addition, we considered the share of households made up of unmarried couples, walkability and ease of running daily errands without a car, and the density of date-night and lifestyle amenities such as restaurants, cafés, bars, cinemas, and entertainment venues within five miles of each city center.

 Finally, we factored in search interest for the term “moving in together” as an indicator of local intent, combining all metrics to identify the cities where couples can most easily transition from two households into one and build a shared life with greater financial and everyday ease.
